Words from the President - January 2021

Each month we try to a spend few minutes with a busy man with numerous responsibilities, one of which is the serving as the Russian Baptist Union president. Here Peter Mitskevich answers questions and shares his heart for Russia with the English-speaking world.

Q:        You had Covid back in November/December? We’re glad you’ve recovered. How did your church family take care of you?

Peter: I always feel people praying for me. The church and our denomination is so supportive in this way. I also felt emotionally and spiritually cared for. I’m really glad to be a part of this family. People really pray for each other. Last year our focus as a denomination was the “year of ministry,” and the main ministry people grew in was the ministry of prayer, as they didn’t have much contact with one another. I remember a couple weeks ago asking everyone to raise their hand who had the virus already.

Q:        Tell us about the focus for this year: the year of evangelism. We’re all very excited about this.

Peter: We are so excited that we have the Bible translated in Russian. Revival started happening around that time (1820) because people started to read it and believe. The Bible teaches us that faith comes through hearing, but that through the word of God, so if people will not hear, they’ll be confused about how to come to the Lord, who is God, etc… because we believe that our society still needs to hear the gospel and truth about Christ. We are praying that many small groups and bible studies will be started especially through young people to bring others to faith in Christ. We pray for our neighbors, coworkers, and society, that they will be spiritually alert, especially during and after the pandemic. People are asking, “Am I ready to die or not? What could happen to me or my family?” This became a necessary question.

Q:        So you think that God is working and preparing people through the pandemic to hear the good news?

Peter: So if the Lord continues to lead us and provide, we are planning a crusade in Saint Petersburg in November. It will be a couple of days at the Ice Palace, which seats 15,000 seats. Please come. Churches are taking steps to prepare, doing mission conferences in their cities, Oblasts, and regions.

Q:        Anything else you want to add?

Peter: It’s our passion and role to know Him and make Him known. For to me to live is Christ and death is secondary. Christ is everything. Events are not important. Christ must be the center of our life. So in everything, we will know Him better and help others know Him too.

It seems you can gather from the interview  how to pray for Peter and the staff at the Baptist Headquarters in Moscow, for individuals, churches and different events being planned. Until next month!
